Rate That Character Round Up #16

We’re back for more Rate That Character-episodes!
What awaits us this week? Well, not as much as before, but we still have plenty of characters to rate.

How about we start rating one of the most requested episodes we received since we launched the series? Is Klonoa worthy as a new character or is NantenJex not so positive about Klonoa’s chances?

Verdict: “Klonoa has many friends outside and inside the gaming industry, That’s a factor, that shouldn’t be too underestimated and could be one of Klonoa’s biggest chances to get into Smash Bros. as a fighter. But this is where his chances already stop. It’s a critically acclaimed series, but not a series that left a big impact on the gaming industry like PAC-MAN and Sonic did. Even the last attempt making Klonoa relevant again unfortunately failed and Klonoa is now sadly in Bandai Namco’s list of dormant franchises

Even with him having an unique moveset to Smash Bros in mind, Klonoa’s ability would also be perfectly suited as an Assist Trophy, if not, even better here. We see his chances as Assist Trophy far bigger than as an actual fighter. There’s a big uncertainty about the status of Klonoa in the air, which blows any favorable pros away as a playable character in Smash Bros.”

Next, we have everyone’s favorite secretary. The best, you can wish for as a major. But does Isabelle have, what it takes to be a Smash Bros.-Fighter? Well, it’s up to Tris to approve the invitation-letter…

Verdict: “With the announcement of Smash Ultimate and the previously mentioned introduction of Echo Fighters, I actually feel that Isabelle’s chances of making it has risen. I believe Isabelle has enough recognition and popularity to be an exciting pick. As most characters in the Animal Crossing series are proven to be able to do the same activities as the main Villager, it’s not unlikely for Isabelle to be an Echo Fighter of Villager, and I personally believe this is how she would make it in. I don’t believe her character as a whole proves to be too much of a flaw at all, as she had no problem throwing shells in Mario Kart 8. Therefore, I believe Isabelle to be a strong candidate to make the cut as an Echo Fighter.”

Now we’re already at the end of this week’s Round Up and…hu? What is Chain Chomp doing here? Did he mistake the room for application as Assist Trophies with the room for application as a fighter? Well, since he’s already here, Tris can rate his chances to see if his career goes beyond the tennis court. Doesn’t hurt us to do it..hopefully.

Verdict: “Chain Chomp makes for a cute surprise as a playable character in Mario Tennis Aces, but beyond that, is simply an enemy or obstacle at best when it comes to other games. I strongly feel that Chain Chomp’s only chance in Smash is to return as an Assist Trophy.”

That’s it, folks!
Hope you’ll tune in next week!

  2. to compaste with the low round of characters, here is mine on jack Frost! i’ll do Ryu Hayabusa later

    Jack Frost theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M7PDKYOF3Nk

HeeHo everyone! Jack Frost is a well known and common demon in the world of Shin Megami Tensei. First appearing in Megami Tensei II, Jack Frost’s cute looks and personally quickly made him Atlus’s mascot and appearing in several other games in the Megami Tensei, Shin Megami Tensei and Persona. However does Jack Frost status as the “hero” of the Shin Megami Tensei series guarantee him a spot in Super Smash Bros or is he just fusion fodder? Let’s take a look

PROS: for starters, Jack Frost does have a large move pool for Sakurai to use as a moveset. This is mostly because of how the player can create their own version of a demon with unique ability through the process of Fusion. While the Bufu spell group will be a main part of Jack Frost’s moveset, he could also learn Agi, Guru, Zio, Dia, Hamon and Mudo spells, physical skills and status attacks. Jack Frost also several different final smashes that could be use such as transforming into King Cold or Black Frost, casting Niflheim one of the most powerful ice spells in the game or similar to Megaman, having the all 6 main characters of Shin Megami Tensei appear and attack.
Secondly, Atlus and Shin Megami Tensei actual have a pretty long history with Nintendo which they have pretty much kept even today. The first game in the Shin Megami Tensei series “Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei” was release on September 11, 1987 in Japan on the NES as well as it’s sequel on April 6 1990. Shin Megami Tensei was also release on the SNES on October 30, 1992 and there were also several Game boy games of the series such as Megami Tensei Gaiden; Last Bible and Devil Kids. Even now Atlus is still supporting Nintendo and it consoles such as Shin Megami Tensei 4 and Apocalypse, Strange Journey Redux and the upcoming Shin Megami Tensei 5. Atlus has also brought in a lot of its RPG onto Nintendo system mainly the Eterian Oddessy Series. Atlus being owned by Sega which also has a good relationship with Nintendo may also bolster Jack Frost’s chances of getting into Smash.
Thirdly, The Shin Megami Tensei have been the go to “morality games” in which the player character is given choices on a subject or problems and those choices often result in the character choosing a side and thus choosing a different ending. In the Shin Megami Tensei games, these are often called routes and are either Law, Chaos or Neutral. I don’t think Super Smash Bros has that style of game represented in it so Jack Frost would be the best choice.

CONS: despite some pretty strong points for Jack Frost, he also has some strong deductions as well. For one similar to Puyo Puyo while it has gotten more popluar world-wide the Shin Megami Tensei series is pretty niche compare to Nintendo’s Pokemon, Square Enix’s Final Fantasy and Namco Bandai’s Tales Of in terms of popularity and public knowledge. There also the “Mascot Vs Avatar” argument where one set of people would say that Jack Frost would be best choice but other set of people would argue that having a Devil Summoner would be a better since he could use other demons including Jack Frost which would represent the series much better. Sega might also be a Con, since they would try and push characters from their own IPs rather than Atlus. Finally, there is also Shin Megami Tensei itself since a lot of the demons come from Christan, Judaism, Islamic and Hinduism religion which some or are straight up inappropriate such as Mara which would be really risky for Nintendo, Sega and Atlus to put in a crossover game.

Final Comments: I feel that Atlus really does deserve a character spot Super Smash Bros with all of the support they given to Nintendo throughout the years and Jack Frost is definitely the best choice to represent them. Despite the religious or social themes of the Shin Megami Tensei games, if they could manage to put Snake and Bayonetta in Smash then it’s possible to Jack Frost to join the battle

  3. Wow, this was quite the small RTC time. Not that I’m complaining, I understand if you guys are too busy with other stuff at the moment.

Here are the rest of my suggestions.

    -Medusa (Kid Icarus)

    -Parabô and Satebô (Satellaview mascots)

    -Slime (Dragon Quest)

-Anyone from Megami Tensei (including sub-series)

  4. Three characters were introduced and rated this week…first time for having this amount of characters, but can’t be helped when you’re busy. Anyways, let’s start commenting these characters!

Klonoa: I do remember people were voting for Klonoa than Pac-Man before due to his unique movesets. Not to mention his titles were brought to Nintendo before starting from GBA, then his remake title for the Wii. But sadly, that was back in the Brawl era; I hardly heard anybody voting for Klonoa as a playable fighter for Smash for, possibly his popularity have gone lower than before. While I wouldn’t say he ultimately dead, but since we haven’t of any new title of his game, I would agree that his chances are low at this moment, even I do love to see him in Smash. It would be good if he appeared as an Assist Trophy though, we’ll just have to see…

Isabelle: I do hear many people being so disagreeable for Isabelle’s case. Everybody says she hates fighting as she’s a pacifist, but I wouldn’t say the same thing if they’re talking about former non-fightable characters like the Villager and Wii Fit Trainer by the way. I mean, if she really was a pacifist, then she wouldn’t join Mario Kart 8 from the first place, where she had an ability to throw shells and bombs at her opponents without hesitation. Also, I do think her Mii Fighter costume had a meaning to it, possibly there were many people voting for her inclusion during the ballot. I don’t know how popular she is in the west, but she is really popular in Japan at least. Eventually, I do think she is in the similar position as Ashley as not just appearing many times in the Badge Arcade, but as the most important female character of Nintendo. And while I never credit any leaks as I do believe they’re all fake, I do think making her the Villager’s Echo Fighter would make a lot of sense. Along with Ashley, as we don’t know of her whereabouts as her Assist Trophy was absent back in the demo, we’ll need to see what has gone with her in the future updates…

Chomp: Although I know this was meant to be some kind of joke, I still wouldn’t think bringing Chomp as a playable fighter is a greatest idea, as I was really sarcastic back at Youtube. It’s like you’re rejecting Toad and Waddle Dee for this guy, and that sound so controversial. Eventually, how would Chomp even fight anyways as it has nothing but “chomping” its opponent? I still do think it should return as an Assist Trophy or even an enemy for Smash Run, if that mode returns by the way.
