Speculation: Is There A Possibility of Street Fighter V: Champion Edition Coming to Nintendo Switch?

While many people are already aware that Street Fighter V and its Arcade Edition are exclusive to the PlayStation 4 thanks to Sony’s funding of the game, the possibility of this still being the case may be under scrutiny due to a recent tweet from video game retailer EB Games’ Canadian Twitter account!

Aside from the PC version of the game, Street Fighter V has been exclusive to the PS4 and has had no sign, previously, of ever coming to other platforms. This was previously reinforced in GameSpot’s interview with Producer Yoshinori Oni when they asked if he had anything to say to Xbox fans and he responded with, “[Laughs] There’s plenty of time to save $300 before the game comes out. The PlayStation 4 is at a very attractive price point at the moment.” In addition, the North American box arts of vanilla SFV and Arcade Edition have had the “PS4 Console Exclusive Game” label on the top of their box arts, as pictured below.

It is important to note that from the image above, the screenshot on the left is from the “Street Fighter V Tutorial” video that was posted on November 17th, 2015 and the screenshot on the right is from the “Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition – V-Trigger Teaser” video that was posted on November 19th, 2017. Both videos were prior to their respective versions releases, but after they were already rated by the ESRB. These things are important to take note of because the reveal trailer of Street Fighter V: Champion Edition shows that the game is already rated but the box art doesn’t feature a label noting that this iteration is a PS4 Exclusive.

The way that the “Only On PlayStation”/”PS4 Console Exclusive Game” label works can sometimes be confusing. Horizon Zero Dawn features the “Only on PlayStation” label and hasn’t released on any other platform, but has been rumored to be coming to PC. Another game, Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance, also features the “Only on Playstation” label but did come to PC and Switch when it was re-released two years later as Disgaea 5: Complete. To continue, The King of Fighters XIV ‘s North American box art, as pictured in the game’s launch trailer, features the “PS4 Console Exclusive Game” label and is only on Steam, just like Street Fighter V.

However, in the November 1st, 2018 interview between DualShockers and SNK Producer Yasuyuki Oda, it was stated that if SNK could overcome the technical hurdles “…it ‘would definitely be a possibility…'” that The King of Fighters XIV could come to Nintendo Switch. Furthermore, SNK showed off a slide at their December 5th, 2018 press conference that pictured several of their games being multi-platform, those games being Samurai Shodown (which comes to Switch in America on February 25th, 2020), a brand new Metal Slug game, and The King of Fighters XIV.

While the game still hasn’t made its way onto the Nintendo Switch, the idea that a producer from SNK is giving off the possibility of it happening while the game is also labeled as a PS4 exclusive is very strange. It is possible that a console exclusivity contract made between SNK and Sony met its end some time ago in 2018, thus opening up that possibility. Perhaps the same thing has happened for Street Fighter V, even though Sony funded the game. However, GameSpot was told in 2015 by a CAPCOM representative that “… the reality is that this is a real partnership. We are console exclusive for this franchise for this numbered run.”

Moving back to EB Games’ tweet, it is important to take note of a few other details within it and on their Canadian Twitter account. To start, the Champion Edition is meant to feature a roster of 40 characters once Seth releases. The first image within the tweet shows off the character select screen for the game but doesn’t include Seth within it, which is very strange because she was already revealed. Unless the character select screen was getting a major overhaul, it’d be very strange to not show an image of it if this was meant to be an official announcement. In addition, on EB Games’ website, Champion Edition isn’t listed for Nintendo Switch.

Continuing with the mistakes, the EB Games’ Canadian Twitter account also tweeted about the Vanquish and Bayonetta 10th Anniversary Edition releasing on February 18th, while showing an accompanying picture of the Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection on Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.

Perhaps I’m thinking about this far too much and this was simply another mistake made by EB Games’ Canadian Twitter account. Perhaps the exclusivity label is missing because the Champion Edition will be coming to the PS5 when that console releases? Whether that’s the case or not, it doesn’t hurt to think about the possibility of Street Fighter V finally making its way onto the Nintendo Switch. What do you think?

  1. It was an error. EB Games Canada have already stated that the tweet was inaccurate.
