Welcome to the fourth edition of Rate That Character Round Up!
Starting us off we have NantenJex rate one of the most requested characters, Ridley:
Ultimately, it is hard to give Ridley a score. He has every single aspect that Sakurai looks for in a character. He is iconic, he is important to his series, he has move set potential, has fan popularity and is kind of unique. Admittedly Charizard already fits the fire-breathing, flying dragon niche but he is more child-friendly than Ridley appears. That could be enough to differentiate them. In the end it comes down to Sakurai and we can’t know how he will view him this time around. It could go either way. – 50%
Verdict:
The next day, NantenJex looked at retro revival for Smash, Mach Rider:
Verdict:
While Mach Rider would certainly be a surprising inclusion and Sakurai definitely likes him, it seems very unlikely that he’ll become a fighter. There are other retro reps that offer more than he does and it is only as a retro rep that he would get in. He has very little relevance in the present day– 20%
PushDustIn came back from his short hiatus to rate Midna, with Kenith’s help.
Verdict:
It might be too late for Midna to get bumped up to a fighter as she’s probably not going to appear in another Zelda game for some time. With the focus shifting to Breath of the Wild and newer content, this only hurts her chances even more. However, with her popularity and support from the devs, she has a better chance than Skull Kid. -40%
Next our first Xenoblade character in the series, Rex and Pyra (rated by NantenJex).
Verdict:
In the end, it could go either way for Rex and Pyra, it mainly comes down to two factors. First does Sakurai see the series as important and relevant enough to get a new character. Most signs point to yes but you can never be too sure. Second, and most important, the creation of the project plan is really important. Usually, it is done in the early design stage which for Smash for Switch would be late 2015-early 2016 and in that case, it would be way too early for Rex and Pyra but perfect for Elma. But, if Smash for Switch began life as a port first and then became a full game mid-development then a new project plan would be made half-way, potentially 2017, and in that case, there is a good chance that Sakurai would know about Rex and Pyra, and go for them. It is all about timing. -70%
Next is one of the most requested Kirby characters, Bandanna Dee (rated by PushDustIn).
Verdict:
I feel like in the end Bandana Dee has a coin flip. Right now it depends on how Sakurai views that character, and that’s information that’s impossible to fully understand. Bandana Dee does have international support for the character, and definitely deserves a spot somewhere in Smash. We will need to wait and see if Sakurai agrees. -50%
Finishing off this week the final character was another popular requst, this time Paper Mario (rated by PushDustIn)
Verdict:
In the end, I personally think the pros greatly outweigh the cons. Paper Mario is the star of his own series…so when people buy Paper Mario games, they are buying it for that particular character. Even though a lot of Nintendo fans are vocally unhappy with the current direction of the series, it still does well enough to warrant new titles. -70%

Here are my opinions regarding to these characters…
Ridley: I’m not really a huge Ridley supporter as I do understand Sakurai’s reasons. He does respect Ridley entirely, which is why he refuses to change his size. And I wouldn’t think this choice was made by Sakurai alone, but its creators as well, since its important to have permission upon certain characters whenever they’re making a crossover game. While I may welcome him being playable in some form, I think his chances are a bit low at this moment.
Mach Rider: I do remember there was one rumor that Mach Rider was planned to be in Smash for 3DS/Wii U, which ended up being debunked as fake though. But I could agree his (or her in the arcade version) chances are low due to being such an old game that’s almost forgotten at this point. However, its true we need more retro reps in Smash, and Mach Rider can be a good candidate, if there’s any idea how he can fight.
Midna: Her chances are definitely low. It doesn’t matter how popular she is, because I wouldn’t think characters will be brought easily to Smash by popularity alone. Thus Midna only appeared once in one Zelda title, while the main trios (Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf) and the main supporters (Impa and Tingle) has appeared many time throughout the entire series. Even Twilight Princess is now too old enough, as Link’s design has changed to his BotW design in the new Smash for Switch. So, bringing a character who only appeared in the old title, may be too difficult at this point. Even we can’t use her movesets from Hyrule Warriors, because that game also belongs to Koei-Tecmo, which permission is highly required.
Rex & Pyra: Since Elma’s chances may be difficult of how Sakurai view Xenoblade X as, the main duo from Xenoblade 2 is plausible. I wouldn’t think they’ll work similarly as the Ice Climbers, but maybe similar to Rosalina and Luma for different movesets. Although they’re still new, I think their chances are high than anybody from ARMS at this moment.
Bandanna Dee: Definitely he should join in. Not just we need more Kirby rep, but he’s more important than Magalor and Susie due to being in most recent Kirby games as being playable and supportive, and even created by Sakurai since Super Star’s Megaton-Punch mini-game. We don’t even have a spear fighter in Smash yet either, so he can be the best candidate for that spot.
Paper Mario: He may be interesting as unique enough to differentiate with the original Mario, like using only a hammer to attack and some paper actions as specials. However, the issue with his case is how Sakurai view Paper Mario as, which possibly can be categorized as a spinoff. Spinoffs are heavily ignored in Sakurai’s mind, which we’ve never seen spinoff related things like Pokemon Mystery Dungeon being in Smash. Sure there were a Paper Mario and even a Mario Kart based stage in Smash, but as bringing a character may be difficult for Sakurai’s own reasons. But even then, Paper Mario wouldn’t simply become another Mario clone (seriously, screw Dr. Mario), so I would like to see Paper Mario join Smash if possible.
Here’s a list of over 100 characters. Overall, I don’t think it’s missing any characters anyone might seriously ask for (It already has plenty of obscure characters as it is!) and nailed every possible character you guys would realistically cover.

I’ll wager an extra challenge here: Cover a video of a character that is 40% or higher likely yet NOT on this list. I will do a double-take and will genuinely show interest in becoming a patron if one of you can pull it off.
