  1. Funny story about Sonic, Sakurai DID plan for him near the start, but SEGA rejected the request, then midway through development, SEGA changed their minds, and thus Sakurai’s team rushed to make a moveset for him, hence why the game was delayed… At least, that’s what I heard, for all I know this could be made-up bullshit. That being said, it absolutely makes sense for a roster to have been decided upon at the beginning, makes it easier to schedule work time and they’ll be able to balance the roster better once they know what everyone can do.

I actually really want to see Heihaci in Super Smash Bros., but according to Sakurai, it was too difficult to turn his 3D fighting style into a 2D one for Smash Bros. I can see that argument, there are some things you can do in a 3D plane that would be hard to make work in a 2D one.

Delphox? Eh, I dunno, I think its pre-evolution form Braixen looks better, but then again, I was never really a full fan of the two starters besides Froakie from Gen 6, anyway. Still, if the decision behind Greninja’s inclusion was anything to go by, we could have easily gotten Delphox instead of Greninja if Sakurai found the former’s design more appealing than the latter’s. That being said, Delphox definitely isn’t my first choice. Probably wouldn’t even be in my top 50, or even top 100 picks… Not that I don’t like Delphox, I’m just kind of “eh” about it.

Also, I gotta say, your scathing description of Delphox’s in-game model had me taken aback a bit. You’re calming voice mixed with an angry tone can be rather unnerving… Also, it’s surprising to see your so enthusiastic about this particular choice. I feel like this is a slightly more personal episode than usual…

Which makes me wonder a bit – Sakurai is a big gamer, and although it might not be entirely the case here, he should’ve at least heard of Street Fighter X Tekken and taken some notes on Heihachi’s transition from Tekken’s 3D playstyle towards the crossover’s more Street Fighter-like 2D fighting style.

But I guess either that never crossed his mind, or he wanted to stay true to how he plays in Tekken and couldn’t find his own way to translate it.

Of course, you’ll still have people complaining how unfaithful Wario is – despite the fact that Wario is very much faithful to how he’s portrayed… But I guess if the character isn’t a 1:1 transition from their movesets in the actual games (Cough Certain Mods Cough) then that means Sakurai doesn’t know the character….
