We here at Source Gaming are at a loss of words.
Satoru Iwata was instrumental in every defining moment of the Super Smash Brothers series, and has made Nintendo what it is. It truly is a sad day for Nintendo fans, and gaming fans in general. I’ve attached pictures to this post to show Iwata with every release of Smash Brothers.
Masahiro Sakurai has already expressed his condolences on Twitter.
“The president of Nintendo, Satoru Iwata has passed away. He was my former employer, but even when my situation and location changed, he was always the most understanding [of me and my work]. A hard worker and a virtuous man, he always supplied me with quick, fair guidance. I believe that he was the greatest leader I could have imagined. May you rest in peace.”
UPDATE: Sakurai later tweeted:
“Even though it’s an abnormal day, and I’m an in abnormal state of mind, I went to work as normal and am continuing development as normal. This would be what Mr. Iwata would have wanted, after all. I will do what I must.”

I can hardly handle this. I feel for his family and all those he impacted. This is a sad day in Nintendo history, for sure.
I am shocked that this happened when he was as young as he was. This is so sad. I’m paying a tribute to him that’s for sure.
Truly a great loss for the industry as a whole. I don’t really know what I can say that hasn’t already been sad.
One of the most influential and tremendous human beings to grace the video game industry. His absence will leave a void for many years to come.
