Cloud’s Victory Quotes Translated!

Victory

Cloud has finally arrived! Although a majority of you have been testing him out online and in free-for-alls, I’m sure his victory sequences have some people scratching their heads: “What’s he saying?”

Well, ask and ye shall receive! Here are Cloud’s three victory quotes:

Quote 1: No hard feelings. (悪く思うな / Waruku omou na)

Quote 2: Better luck next time. (ついてないな / Tsuite nai na)

Quote 3: I’m out of your league. (お前に俺は倒せない / Omae ni ore ha taosenai)

Happy Smashing!

  1. Aha! Those definitely sound like things he’d say.

    • Never actually played Final Fantasy, but Nintendo puts a lot of effort in making sure that the characters are true to their native games. Just look at Mega Man’s Arsenal.

      • Agreed! I think these three lines all capture Cloud’s cool, slightly standoffish persona.

    • He even says “Waruku omou na” in Dissidia

  2. Still boggles my mind that they didn’t bother to dub him. He has less reason to be speaking in Japanese than Marth and Roy do.

    • It’s especially sad since it means we don’t get “alright everybody, let’s mosey” as a victory quote.

      • Given the poor localization FFVII received, I’m sure the team didn’t want to include a line that will inevitably get overwritten in the remake. (That said, they preserved “Not interested”/興味ないね for the Jump Festa trailer, so maybe we’ll end up moseying after all!)

        • You guys probably know that Cloud voiced started in kingdom hearts on ps2, and so on. Cloud’s dub voice actor is always is Steve Burton in every appearance. It is strange that Cloud in Smash uses only Japanese while the FF7 Remake uses his dub for the west and I really wonder why.

If they port smash 4 is to NX, what are the chances of dubbing Cloud?

          • Part of me feels Cloud was included specifically to appeal to the JRPG “purists,” i.e. those who prefer JP voices over EN dubs. There may have been other factors preventing the team from getting Steve on board for the recording, but I imagine there’s also a substantial number of people happier with his JP voice.

    • I think that it was a time contranst issue. Apparently Steve Burton wasn’t even asked to reprise his role.

  3. I find it interesting how you chose to translate the third quote. Don’t get me wrong I like it with more attitude as opposed to a direct literal translation like “You can’t defeat me.” Anyway thanks for doing these Masked Man!

    • Yeah, I felt something with a bit more edge was appropriate. I translate for a living, and 直訳 often feels “flat” to me, so I do what I can to emphasize/bring out flavor in the line while retaining the character of the original text. 🙂

  4. Im happy he speaks japanese, but I still want Fox, Falco and the others in their japanese originals

  5. honestly i hope they end up patching in his English VA, because the fact he is in Japanese pretty much is out of place considering that the games he appeared in where cloud was voiced they used his English voice. I’m pretty disappointed that they went with this in smash.

    • 興味ないね/”Not interested,” one of his most (in)famous lines from FFVII. ?
