Regular Match: All-Star Mode
Page last updated 21 December 2001
For single-player “Regular Match” game modes, it looks like there are two choices: “Classic” and “Adventure”.
But actually, there are three! There’s a hidden mode called “All-Star”. Like the name suggests, all characters in the game appear in this mode, so it won’t show up until all of the hidden characters are unlocked.
Basically, it’s a straightforward mode where you fight CPU opponents. Once you pick a character, you’re thrown into battle right away.
When a battle ends, your damage percentage stays the same and you’re sent to the Rest Area. The Rest Area contains 3 Heart Containers. Each will restore 100% of your damage, so you can use them to heal when you want to.
Also in the Rest Area is a warp portal. Once you step inside, it teleports you to the next battle.
If you use a Heart Container but then step in the portal before the healing is complete, the healing will stop, so be careful not to waste any.
There’s 13 stages in all.
Enemies appear in the following pattern:
Stage 1~4 : 1v1
Stage 5~8 : 2v1
Stage 9~12 : 3v1
Stage 13 : ?
As you near the end, enemies will attack in groups, so you’ll need to think carefully about when to heal yourself. And as an added bonus, you’ll occasionally find trophies available for pickup in the Rest Area.
Also, when you beat All-Star mode, you’ll unlock another different-colored trophy for the character you used.
That means there’s three trophies to collect for each of your characters:
Classic trophy: Complete Classic mode, or play 100 VS matches with that character.
Smash trophy 1: Complete Adventure mode, or play 200 VS matches with that character.
Smash trophy 2: Complete All-Star mode, or play 300 VS marches with that character.
All-Star is like a bonus game mode thrown in at the end, and it feels similar to a boss rush.
…
If you’ve been reading this and thought, “Wait a minute, these rules seem familiar…?!”, you’re a sharp one.
Actually, I intentionally used pretty much the same rules as “The Arena”, a hidden stage in the game Kirby Super Star.
“The Arena” is a game mode where you fight bosses back-to-back, with a limited number of Maximum Tomatoes.
As a matter of fact, the Rest Area music is also arranged from the rest area music in “The Great Cave Offensive”, also from Kirby Super Star.
I wonder what percentage of players have noticed this??
(Maybe less than 10%, I think.)
Well, this is another one of those secret ingredients that makes Smash special.
