How Rude Bear got Rude
With this new game are you considering it a continuation of the previous games, an entirely new canon or a remake of the original Rude Bear Resurrection?
So one thing you have to understand about the Rude Bear universe is that it is ridiculous. It started out as a bit of a stab at the Zelda universe so we have the ‘Hero is Successful’ route and the ‘Hero is Unsuccessful’ route but then we decided that Rude Bear Radio, a WarioWare-style game, didn’t really fit into the universe. It was then that we decided that Rude Bear is actually a man called “Rudey McBearson” and he is in a mental hospital and the Rude Bear timeline has two axis: a horizontal one which is the timeline of Rudey the man and then a vertical timeline which is the one starring Rude Bear which goes through multiple time periods.
However, the vertical timeline is also split up into multiple parallel universes and the Rude Bear found in Super Rude Bear Resurrection is from the hero is successful route which is completely different from all the games before it. The original Rude Bear Resurrection is actually in the Unsuccessful timeline.
So what you’re saying is this isn’t a remake but a new story set at the same time in a parallel universe?
Yeah, exactly. It’s the universe where Rude Bear defeated the Wizard in Rude Bear Rising. We are considering making all of the commercial Rude Bear games in this timeline and all the free Game Jam ones in the downfall timeline.
The setting and story are quite bizarre and funny. What was the original inspiration for it?
I had been making games since I was a child but I had never released anything before. For my first Game Jam I decided to ask my housemate, who is an engineer, to help me with the visuals. Neither of us are good at drawing but he is better than me. I wanted to make some kind of biblical RPG but he said we should keep things simple: you are a bear in a park and you go around mauling people. The theme was you are the villain, you see.
I didn’t think a bear was very interesting so I suggested we make him a gangster bear. This is when he got his pink cap, he had a clock necklace where the hands pointed to 420 and we had the music be some gangsta beats. The problem though is that we failed to make him the villain. We ended up not making the police very nice and Rude Bear ended up becoming a sympathetic character because the reason he was mauling people was because of the Wizard [series antagonist].
So he is just a bear because my housemate said he should be (laughs).
The game actually starts with Rude Bear coming out of a pond and this only happens because I was listening to a song called ‘Come up out da water’ at the time. As for his name, it comes from a character called Rude Boi from the British TV show ‘Kaching!’. If those two things had never happened the Rude Bear series would have never have been made.
