My stance on third-party characters in Super Smash Bros. is this: they have to have some kind of history with Nintendo, preferably a strong on. Snake is an exception, due to his creator Hideo Kojima specifically requesting him to be include, and Cloud is the motherload of all exceptions, due to the massive amount of requests for him for years, even those made in jest. I forget exactly where, but I recall Sakurai saying he didn’t want to go too overboard with third party characters, and I’m inclined to agree with him there; Super Smash Bros. should be about Nintendo first and foremost. Some claim that Smash Bros. is just “evolving” into being about video games in general and not just Nintendo, to which I say it’s a slippery slope from saying third party characters relevant to Nintendo, to third party characters in general, to fourth party characters like “Shrek” or “Spongebob” to literally anyone you can imagine. What they call evolution I call losing focus, which is something I don’t want to happen to Super Smash Bros.
As for Bomberman, I’ve seen people rooting for him since Brawl, and with Smash Bros. for 3DS/Wii U, he was almost up there with Pac-Man in some circles. I think I wanted Simon Belmont more than him as far as third party characters go, but needless to say, once Super Bomberman R was announced, EVERYONE’S been pushing for him in Super Smash Bros.! I am too, to an extent. It DOES seem weird that Konami (rest in peace Hudson Soft) would suddenly decide to revive Bomberman after 5 years of nothing, and make it a Nintendo Switch exclusive at that. Then you hear things like it was Nintendo that came to them about it, and it’s not hard to think Nintendo might be interested in Bomberman, for one reason or another. Maybe he got a lot of votes in the Smash Bros. Fighter Ballot, and Nintendo is using that for more than just future Super Smash Bros. games. Knowing Konami, I HIGHLY doubt they were legitimately interested in making a new Bomberman game, since they’ve had such a lack of focus on anything other than making pachinko machines lately, though thanks to Super Bomberman R’s success, they might look into reviving other properties, most notably Castlevania. But anyway, given that there’s been a Bomberman game on every Nintendo system save the 3DS and the Wii U, I’d say he’s more than a good fit for Super Smash Bros.!
I’m glad Delzethin decided to make a video on Bomberman, since I frequently see people say “how is he supposed to fight? All he does is throw bombs!”, so this will help give people an idea of how he can play while staying true to character!
I do see Bomberman being in Smash, but not as a long dead Hudson rep, but as a Konami rep alongside with Snake. I still remember everybody was requesting his entry since Brawl as I’ve seen on fanart of Bomberman fighting in Smash before, almost in the actual character page from the Smash Brawl website. Although Konami killed Hudson for good, which probably made many Hudson fans go berserk at them, Konami did proven their care with their lost franchises, which resulted bringing back Bomberman in a new form, probably a reboot. But before that, you forgot to mention Konami did also brought back another Hudson game before Bomberman, which is Momotaro Dentestu for 3DS. Due to Bomberman’s return, his possibility to join Smash is plausible now, but that depends on Konami if they’re supporting this series now.
The 8 siblings does make a perfect fit as Bomber’s alts, but not as gender alts since there will be differences with their styles unlike the Koopalings. Also, as Sakurai does sometime focus upon classic designs, I do think he’ll use the classic design of Bomberman, while his voice will be played by the female voice actor who worked as Bomberman back then. Not just only his original series, but I do think Sakurai will bring in Dream Mix TV’s movesets as small references.
While third party’s inclusion is quite pending at this moment, seeing Bomberman in Smash is something I really want to see. Thanks for presenting us such great vid Delzethin!
