SourceGaming Choice #6 – Mii Fighter Costumes

SG Choice #6
*The following article is opinion-based and should be treated as
such.

So here we are again, presenting another SG Choice article! Last time we looked at third party characters. This time we will be looking at our most wanted Mii Fighter costumes! These are generally characters that we know don’t have much hope of becoming a playable fighter, but ones we like enough to want to get a little piece of, in the glory that is Super Smash Bros.

Lou (Three Wonders)
I first discovered the glory that is Three Wonders through Lou’s guest appearance in Marvel vs. Capcom. The design of the character really spoke to me so I researched into him and ended up playing his home game. Or rather 2 games. Three Wonders is essentially three games in one, and two of those star Lou and his comerade, Siva. Midnight Wanderers pits them in a 2D side scrolling adventure not dissimilar to Ghost N’ Goblins, though the graphical style, character designs, music and overall charm of the game far exceeds Ghost N’ Goblins in my opinion. The second was a Gradius style game named “Chariot”. Chariot serves as a sequel to Midnight Wanderers.
As a rather obscure Capcom character, Lou really stands no chance to ever make it into Smash Bros. as a playable character. But seeing him brought back in the form of a Mii Fighter costume would be a truly great moment. Three Wonders firmly sits in my top 10 favourite video games of all time.

9-Volt (WarioWare)
As I stated in our first podcast, my outlandish (and only ballot vote) was 9-Volt from WarioWare. I know he doesn’t stand much of a chance, but I still would like to see him in the game. If he doesn’t get in as a character, then I’d like to see him at least as a Mii Fighter costume. It’d probably be a little off putting (probably suffering from the same weirdness that plagues the Toad costume), but I’m down for more WarioWare representation.

nocturnal YL
Magolor (Kirby’s Return to Dream Land)
The Kirby series is somewhat lacking presence in this iteration of Smash. One new stage per version (which I don’t quite find satisfying), Nightmare (who doesn’t even behave like he does in his own games), a few Smash Run enemies and 6 new soundtracks, and that’s it – everything else is old. I wouldn’t say that Kirby really needs new full-fledged, playable characters, but they should still throw in a few treats for the series, and Mii costumes could be one of those. Recent Kirby characters have outstanding outfits that should easily translate to the humanoid Mii costumes, and I want to see those.

Takamaru (The Mysterious Murusame Castle)
Takamaru is the missing fighter in the Famicom-four. This quartet contains Link, Samus, Pit and Takamaru, four characters whose games came out all in the same year in Japan and heavily influenced each other. Sakurai even references this in his ‘pic of the day’ miiverse post when he revealed Takamaru’s assist trophy:

“Pic of the day. I, Takamaru, have waited many years to appear in Super Smash Bros.! Link, Samus, Pit, and I debuted in the same year! Multidirectional Pinwheel Knife Rook Attack!! (FYI, I’m an Assist Trophy.)”

I have wanted Takamaru to be playable ever since Super Smash Bros Brawl however he has suffered some major issues: until 2013, his game was Japan-only and it is this lack of recognition that Sakurai has said was the main cause for him not making the cut this time around. Despite voting for him in the smash ballot, I do not believe Takamaru will make it in as DLC as he is already an assist trophy. Maybe smash 5 but that does not help here. That is why I will settle for a mii fighter costume. Most of the work is done for Sakurai and his team, as the Murasame series was represented in Nintendoland with the Mii’s in that game dressing up as Takamaru so there is already a mii design of the character made. Now they just have to put that in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U/3DS and I have a feeling that they will.

Ganondorf (The Legend of Zelda)
It may seem odd choosing a Mii Fighter costume based on an already playable character, though I must specify that this costume would be available for Mii Sword Fighters. The costume would be based on Ganondorf’s design in Smash Bros. 3DS/Wii U and the sword would be the same as the one Ganondorf shows off in his down taunt. It wouldn’t be the same thing as playing as Ganondorf with his sword, but would be the next best thing, similar to so many of the costumes for characters that either didn’t or likely won’t make the cut. I also add that the same could be made for Zelda and the rapier she has in Twilight Princess and Hyrule Warriors.

Joe Musashi (Shinobi)
Ninjas are a video game staple, and the fact that the only Ninja related Mii costume we have is of the generic variety is a travesty.  It actually makes me incredibly sad to see that cool looking shuriken neutral special not get used on most of my Mii sword fighters.  When looking at the characters from all the companies that have been involved in Smash DLC,  two ninjas immediately stood out to me: Joe Musashi from Shinobi and Hiryu Strider from Strider.  Of the two, Joe is the more traditional ninja, so he got the nod.  That’s not too say that he isn’t cool looking (he is) or that his franchise is any less important.  The Shinobi games were some of the best action platformers that Sega has ever made, from the original 1987 arcade game to 2011’s Shinobi 3D on the 3DS.

Do you agree with our choices? Which Mii Fighter costumes would you like to see in Smash Bros. as DLC? Let us know in the comments below!

  1. Wow, cool choices, everyone!

Takamaru and Musashi are my top two picks, but I have to give props to TheAnvil for mentioning the obscurity that is Lou. It would be even cooler if Mii Fighter costumes changed the appearance of attacks… I’d love to see arrows flying out of his pistol like in his home game.

My top pick for Mii Fighter costumes is, without a doubt, an Ice Climber costume. Like the monkey, cat, and hunter costumes, it could be Popo for males and Nana for females. Replacing the sword with the hammer probably sounds odd, but I think it could work well. Since Sakurai is unlikely to give us Ice Climbers in any actual character form in Smash 4, this is the next best thing.

Another costume they absolutely NEED to make (and I’m sure they will eventually) is the plumber overalls they showed in the proposal slides. I could see them changing color like the Toad outfit based on the Mii’s favorite color. My Waluigi Mii seriously needs this… he looks like a poor-man’s WarioWare Wario right now. 🙁 (http://vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net/ssb/images/8/8a/Ww-waluigi.JPG/revision/latest?cb=20150603002935)

    • Ike Climbers!

    • Having the arrows fly out of his crossbow would be really cool! Not sure how I’d feel about Ice Climbers though, it might seem like a slap in the face to some!

      • I think Mii Fighter costumes are a good consolation prize for characters we won’t see in Smash this time around. Unless Sakurai does the unthinkable and makes Ice Climber solo or somehow gets both of them to work, I think having a Mii Fighter costume is better than zero Ice Climbers in my Smash 4. 🙁

  2. You know, I honestly haven’t thought much about Mii Fighter costumes. I’ve focused so much on costume ideas for non-Miis that I’ve barely given it a thought!

…Though it’d be good if we see Wonder Red, Blue, and Green costumes for the Brawler, Swordfighter, and Gunner, respectively. Well, if Wonder Red didn’t get in on his own, anyway.

  3. Obviously, ever since the release of the 3rd wave DLC, I’ve stopped purchasing the Mii Fighter costumes since it was useless, but this article actually gave me interests of making ideas for the costumes. Although I wouldn’t buy any costumes further on, there are costumes that I would like to see in some form. I’ve thought of a top 5 of it…

    5. Nightmare (Swordsman): Yes there is FE’s Black Knight, but having another evil knight character from Soul Calibur can be an interesting one. However, having Nightmare holding the Soul Edge with one arm does look strange in appearance since that sword isn’t THAT light.

    4. Pulse Man (Brawler): This super hero is one of Game Freak’s creations that was released for Sega during the Sega Genesis era, and I would like to see a Game Freak but Sega franchised character to be as a costume. The only downside is that this game’s never been released in the west, so it may be impossible. And speaking of Game Freak…

    3. Blaziken (Brawler): We may already have Flying Man, but we don’t have any Pokemon related costumes. Blaziken costume for Brawler does fit well for every move sets, but the odd part is that it won’t have any Fire type abilities; thus I wouldn’t think anybody would mind.

    2. Octoling (Gunner): We may have the Inklings already, but not for the popular Octolings yet! Sure there’s only a female Octoling in the actual Splatoon as the male version is still unknown, but having the Octoling wig with goggles would fake its appearance I guess.

    1. Frank West (Brawler): Dead Rising’s main protagonist Frank West was always meant to be the legendary and the ultimate zombie killing photo journalist alongside with Resident Evil’s Chris Redfield throughout the Capcom history, and having a costume for the Brawler does fit and make sense for reflecting Frank’s identity; such as using various melee attacks and using every items as weapons. Sure it may be impossible to bring him as costume since there’s too many Capcom based costumes, but even though, it’ll be one interesting thing to see.

I could think of more, like various Pokemon Trainers, Fossil Fighter protagonist, or even Captain Rainbow, but this is my personal top 5 I could give out right now.

    • Pulseman has (kind of) come out in the west – it was on the Sega Channel back in the day, and the Wii Virtual Console.
