SG Choice: Gamecube Virtual Console Titles

As the day of reckoning draws nearer, and rumours begin heating up for the upcoming Nintendo Switch, we discuss our most wanted titles for a Gamecube Virtual Console!

Star Fox Assault. A lot of GameCube titles are really expensive nowadays, going for way more than their original RRP, so it is all of these games I really want to see on the GameCube VC. I want to finally play some of these titles and of all the ones I don’t own Star Fox Assault is the one I am most excited for. I am part of that minority that actually likes Star Fox Adventures so I don’t understand why I never picked up Namco’s sequel. With a fun multiplayer mode, an expansive story, multiple characters it just seems like the best evolution the series could’ve had at that point. It is not perfect, sure, but at least it was not Star Fox 64 again. It tried new things and tried to improve upon 64’s land combat which was the right direction for the series to go, in my opinion.

Kirby’s Air Ride. While the game is quite inexpensive in the West….here in Japan the title is pretty expensive even used. Like NantenJex, I would love to have the opportunity to be able to experience the game without breaking the bank. GameCube is one of my favorite systems of all time, so I’d be excited to see those titles on the Virtual Console service.

It would have to be
LEGO Star Wars: The Original Trilogy. When I was a kid, I used to play that game all the time and sink hours into it. I’d get to points where I’d buy the extras from the Mos Eisley Cantina and just rack up a bunch of LEGO studs. I unfortunately couldn’t max it out to the limit, but I did certainly rack up quite a lot. Although, I know a quite few friends who did reach that limit. So, I might just have to push a little bit harder next time. With the game getting re-released on the Switch, I could play it on the go which would be freaking amazing.

Hmm, this is a tough one. There are plenty of Gamecube games I would love to see on the Switch Virtual console, but a lot of my favorites, such as Wind Waker and Metroid Prime, have already seen remasters or rereleases. Super Smash Bros. Melee is the obvious choice here, but another title that stands out to me is Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem. It’s a very cool and unique horror game that more people should have the opportunity to play and if it happens to sell well on the VC, we may even see a sequel one day!

Star Fox Adventures! I could have easily selected a title like Luigi’s Mansion or Super Mario Sunshine here but I went with something that is a little questionable in terms of its likeliness. It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of Rare, and I was a big fan of what they did in Star Fox Adventures. Even if it lead the franchise down a slippery slope I’d still love to relive this game in all of its glory. Not to mention on-the-go!

What Gamecube games would you like to see on a virtual console? Let us know in the comments.

  1. Path of Radiance would be my obvious choice, but really, I would love to see Battalion Wars or Custom Robo come over.

Battalion Wars’s very interface would have been really compatible with the Wii U, so surprised we didn’t get one on there. Must have been the low sales, but it’s gameplay would’ve really worked, I think. xD

  2. It’s so tough to choose just one, so I’ll go with Soul Calibur 2, i got introduced to this series on the GameCube and it was fun my favorites were Taki and Link, no joke, Link guest stars in Sc2 on the GameCube, it may sound impossible to put sc2 on virtual console, but it can happen. It was tough to think one, but I’ll add these series at the bottom as honorable mentions, I’ll probably forget.

    Mario Kart: Double Dash
    Fire Emblem Path of Radiance
    Sonic Adventure 2
Pokemon XD:Gale of Darkness or colosseum.
    Tales of symphonia
    Viewtiful Joe

    Vigilante 155 on December 15 |
    • One game that I forgot to put on my honorable mention was F-Zero GX, the soundtrack was good, the voice was cheesy yet entertaining, and the gameplay still feels amazing.

  3. Kind of surprised no one mentioned Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance. It’s considered one of the best games in the series, and this would give more fans a chance to see Ike’s story without having to pay an arm and a leg.

  4. Well if the rumors are true, I’m getting one of my favorites with Sunshine – I could pop it in during winter and play in a tropical paradise all day long – kinda as I’m doing now with Sun/Moon (And play Skyrim in the summer to escape into a winter wonderland, although Steep may also be joining that now…) – even though I’m a core Smasher, I was actually more excited for that than with Melee. (Frankly, because I can see fan issues with Melee’s VC release)

I would say aside from that, Kirby’s Air Ride is my most wanted. KAR had LAN capabilities, whose to say they couldn’t modify that to work with the Switch’s whole multi-player on two screens deal they had on the Switch trailer? It’d take a while, but it’s not unheard of, considering the VC release of Pokemon Snap allowed you to post pictures to your Wii Messages (Did anyone use that feature?) and I would love to play City Trail again. No joke, I spent three full hours messing around in City Trail’s free mode just flying Air Ride machines, destroying things, and playing around with until Robobot’s mini-mode – the only full 3D Kirby experience sans inhaling enemies.

Chibi-Robo would be a nice release too… I liked Zip Lash, but I liked the first game more. It’d be a treat to see it again.

Finally, the original Animal Crossing would be a great addition. Granted, no E-reader capability, but like possibly adding to KAR for the LAN capability, they could do some sort of thing involving the AC amiibo (which I see is a similar parallel…) – the one thing I’d miss though is using the Train, it was fun even if you didn’t go anywhere, if you had a second memory card you could pretend your character is going on a trip, and when you play the game again after some time, they’ll be getting off the train.

As for games we won’t get…

I don’t think we’d get the GCN Pokemon games, those seemed to be made primarily to provide Pokemon that weren’t in Gen 3 due to the Pokemon games revising everything between gen 2 and gen 3 with code and whatnot.

I also don’t think we’ll get Tales of Symphonia, the exclusivity deal in the US is done, considering the game was released on PS3 in a Symphonia collection along with the Wii sequel and was also recently released on Steam.
