Featured-Comment

I’m now pretty behind on Featured Comments. Let me explain: my girlfriend has moved to Japan for three months, so we’ve been spending weekends together. This means, all my free time that I’ve been using for Source Gaming has to be better managed than it has been. Before, I was using almost all my free time to run the site, but now I can’t do that. Last weekend, I met up with Nantendo, and James Montagna (from WayForward) and all of us hung out! It was a lot of fun, but that means I had only time after my actual job this week to work on Source Gaming projects. These projects included interviewing Jeff Manning, some other discussions, and organizing posts/ working on guest posts. Therefore, Featured Comments weren’t prioritized, and today is my first day that I can work on them.  So, I hope you can excuse me for not being 100% around.

This article looks at comments made from the November 6th- November 8th!

I’ll finish catching up this week (I promise!).

Remember, don’t insult other posters. If you insult other posters, your post that you might have spent so much time on might not get approved, and thrown in the trash. Stay classy!

Now this is the kind of gritty, intellectual discussion I can get behind.

“Ryo’s biggest issue perhaps lies in the platforms his games have appeared on. None of the main-series Shenmue games have ever seen the light of day on a Nintendo system, or will any time soon. This means that Nintendo fans have only ever experienced this character through his spin-off appearances in Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing and Project X Zone 2.”

That doesn’t really seem like a big issue to me at all. I mean, Cloud is in the same boat, right? Final Fantasy 7 has of yet to be playable on Nintendo hardware and he’s only made appearances through cameos in games like Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories and Theatrhythm.

Sakurai’s already stated in the past that having appearances on Nintendo consoles isn’t a strict requirement, it’s just more of a “courtesy”. https://sourcegaming.info/2015/10/05/sakuraithirdparty/

From:The Case For: Ryo Hazuki

That’s very true! It’d be interesting to see how Sakurai would approach Ryo.

My only worry is the Gamecube controller adapter and the various multiplayer modes. Based on the trailer we are given, the only way to play multiplayer on one screen so far that’s shown is with both joypads used by two people, while the other times multiplayer is shown, it’s with each person with their own Switch, or with the NBA 2K segment, two Switch systems and four people playing, each with a joypad.

I think that’s the big reason why Smash was omitted, as I’ve seen some who wanted to see Smash – but disappointed it wasn’t the ‘eSports’ segment instead of Splatoon. That being said, would there be a USB port on the actual system, would the adapter even be compatible? And how exactly would multiplayer even work for the thing? Would it be traditional like Mario Kart, or would each player have to use their own system, like the case for Splatoon?

From:Is “Smash for Switch” going to be an ENHANCED port? [Discussion]

There’s a lot of reason to be concern about a Smash for Switch port. Controller options, is going to be up there. Luckily, Sakurai seems to want to accommodate a lot of controller options, as he included a ton in Brawl and Smash for Wii U. I don’t think Switch will force you into one scheme.

Sorry for the late reply but my internet was really bad for about a week. If they have different moves, even slightly, then are they really alts anymore? You could easy just add some sort of custom option for Marth that removes the sweetspot mechanic in favour of a balanced blade.

From:Featured Comments

Everything Sakurai had said, it would’ve been different characters on the same slot.

MagcargoMan

They have every reason to be removed or changed. And nope, there was bad experience in the previous games too. In Brawl Star Fox was overrepped with three characters when such a small series (five games at the time, six if count Star Fox 2 even though it wasn’t released) and gave birth to the infamous “Landmaster Final Smashes for everyone” meme (the meme is funny, but the point is three identical Final Smashes is completely lame, and Star Wolf don’t even have tanks) and Toon Link doesn’t use any items exclusive to Wind Waker, which disappoints me as a fan of that game.

And in Melee clones led to Falcondorf who still persists in Smash to this very day, as well as Falco’s sacred cow status that caused him to get in over Wolf in Smash 4 when the latter was more unique from Fox. Not to mention Dr Mario and Roy returning in Smash 4 because they existed in Melee in the first place.

And yeah, Pokemon had a clone. A clone who was cut, had an awful gimmick and nobody likes unironically.

From:Featured Comments

In all fairness, Pichu’s gimmick was a continuation of Jigglypuff from Smash 64. Sakurai wanted to add a joke character that was intentionally weak.

With a lot of clones, there’s not an option of having a better moveset or not. It’s the option of having the character even being playable.

MagcargoMan

I hope not. I’d be incredibly annoyed if not only did I have to buy what is basically the same game for the THIRD time, but would also feel very angry that the 3DS version held back the Wii U version’s potential for the sake of parity, only for there to be a better version that makes the whole holding back for parity thing pointless in the first place. Not to mention it’d feel very repetitive since it’d just be the game I’ve already played on 3DS and Wii U with what is basically an expansion pack.

Smash needs a clean slate. Smash 5 needs to be fresh.

From:Is “Smash for Switch” going to be an ENHANCED port? [Discussion]

Why not just build upon Smash for Wii U/3DS? Building upon it means that there’s less of a chance of things getting cut.

Wario’s moves from Warioland isn’t his most iconic thing. Him being this greedy version of Mario has been there and the literal cause of his creation was a job at Mario from what I remember. Wario in Smash was all for the sake of things flowing and programming well and for the sake of originality. Wario is still himself in Smash without being generic and plain. Mario and Luigi don’t have ground pounds either because that move is super generic and better off for just Bowser and Yoshi.

From:Featured Comments

Pretty much this. With Wario’s series being splintered into Wario Land and WarioWare, it made a lot of sense to represent who Wario was, instead of one series over the other.

Sm4sh has been in development since 2012-2013

Good.

Remember, we wrote a timeline of development if you ever need to reference it!

Hyrule Warriors Legends is a “deluxe” edition of Hyrule Warriors, a 1.5 year old game. As I stated before, developers always get away with releasing the same game with more content so that you end up paying twice. Street Fighter is the most known culprit of this. Additionally, they probably wanted to port to the 3DS because of the large market it has compared to the Wii-U.

How often does Sakurai “redesign” characters that he has no affiliation with? He’s the reason why Pit looks the way he does today. He could have made him look like his original NES appearance for Super Smash Bros. Brawl, but didn’t. Pit wasn’t even able to turn his bow into two blades. That was Sakurai’s idea. You are implying he has no Kid Icarus bias, so then why did he choose to give Dark Pit, of all people, his own character slot? Why does he deserve it? “All in my head”, right.

Ryu and Ken both have the Ansatsuken fighting style which looks basic and straightforward in appearance, which is why you may point out similarities in their move set. They were both meant to have the same fighting style. Pit & Dark Pit were meant to have different weaponry, but Sakurai still insisted he had to be a character, god help us all.

Ryu & Ken play differently in SFIV. Ryu is more of a zoner while Ken has to be played more in the mix-up game. Not just a simple tweak, a move that a character should have had all along, or a “different” Final Smash. Smash for Wii-U & 3DS came out in 2014. SFIV came out in 2008.

From:Featured Comments

Ryu and Ken’s differences sounds a lot like the difference Lucina, Marth and Roy. With Black Pit and Pit, there aren’t that many differences but it was a decision made very late in development. That’s probably why Dark Pit didn’t have a challenger screen while Lucina did.

  1. “Why not just build upon Smash for Wii U/3DS?”

Because I don’t want to buy what is basically the same game for a third time. Smash Wii U is my least played Smash, and one of the reasons is because after sinking over a hundred hours into the 3DS version by the time I played it, it felt like I was playing the same game despite the new stages and modes. A brand new Smash would make things feel fresh again.

“With Wario’s series being splintered into Wario Land and WarioWare, it made a lot of sense to represent who Wario was, instead of one series over the other.”

Why couldn’t he represent both (and Wario World too for that matter)? Have him have the shoulder barge, piledriver, Earthshake Punch and bike all in one moveset. Wario Land is barely existent in the Smash series, and Smash 4 reduced what little representation it had even further. Literally the only Wario Land thing in Smash 4 is one song, and it wasn’t even a remix.

    • In all fairness, you probably feel that Sm4sh for Wii U was too much like Sm4sh for 3DS because they were meant to provide the same experience. Aside from the differing modes and stages, the characters and mechanics are more or less the same between the two, and that’s how you experience the gameplay. Even though each game was meant for different purposes (3DS was for personal use while Wii U was for local multiplayer if I’m not mistaken), they are both still “Smash 4”. To that end, I don’t think you should have expected a different experience between the two.

      • I didn’t expect a different experience, I just didn’t expect to feel burnt out on Smash 4 by the time I got the Wii U version. This is why I’d really rather not have Smash Switch just be the third version of Smash 4.

  2. Yo Push, you put this comment twice on two different Featured Comments. Not sure if I posted the exact same thing twice on two separate occasions though. I seem to check this site every other month…
