SourceGaming Choice #4 – New Music Tracks

SG Choice 4 Music Tracks

*The following article is opinion-based and should be treated as such.
*EDIT: There was a mistake in the original post and parts of the article were not originally published. Comments have also been enabled. Sorry for the confusion.

We are here today to present yet another Source Gaming Choice! Last time we looked at which clone characters we wanted to see. New music tracks. By this we mean tracks that have not appeared in Smash Bros yet. Any series that has been represented in Smash Bros in any form is fair game. For each track, we’ve included rationale behind the choice.

TheAnvil
Choice: Hyrule Town Market.
From: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Why: Talk about Nostalgia. This is such a memorable track, arguably from the single greatestHyrule_Castle_Town_Markett gaming soundtrack of all time. To me, this has a special meaning. It always indicated a point in the game when things were about to get super serious. Which was humorous considering the tempo of the song itself. There’s also something weirdly unfitting and yet fitting about fighting to it, and I’d love to be able to experience that
.

Name: Nantendo
Choice: Hisstocrat
From: Super Mario 3D World
Why: When Super Mario 3D World dropped the trailer with this music in the background, i got more hyped for the game than i had been before. This tune shows off everything that the developers were going for with this Big Band fueled soundtrack. The music is perfect for figHisstocrat2hting on as that is what it is used for within its own game. The Hisstocrat theme is the music that plays during all carnival boss fights (those are the fights in-between worlds 3, 6 and right before the final bowser level). This music always gets me pumped to play Super Mario 3D World and would be perfect for any Bowser-inspired stage that Sakurai and his team may want to include in the future.

Name: PushDustIn
Choice: Ballad of the Wind Fish
From: The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening
Why: This song makes me incredibly nostalgic. Link’s Awakening is possibly my 2nd favorite Zelda game of all time, and the song is incredibly powerful. It’s been referenced numer250px-LAawakeningthewindfishous times outside of Link’s Awakening, such as in Majora’s Mask by the Indi-Gos. It’s not really a ‘fighting song’, but I think it could be incorporated into a medley. A version was intended to appear in Brawl, but was cut for unknown reasons. I think it’s time for the stage to make it’s long awaited appearance in Smash.

Name: DMurr
Choice: Final Map 250px-Fe2boxTheme
From: Fire Emblem Gaiden
Why: Brawl brought to us a remixed “With Mila’s Divine Protection” and Smash 4 a “Fight 1” remix.  Having played through and completed Fire Emblem Gaiden, I can say that my favorite song from that game not already in Smash is the music that plays on the map of the final chapter.  It’s simple, yet great.  As far as I know, it has not been remixed in any other game, but I would love to see one of the composers from Smash Bros. take a crack at it.  In regards to remixed Gaiden songs, Radiant Dawn has a version of one of Alm’s map themes that went unused! This would also be a great addition that could even just be the original.

New_Age_Retro_Hippie_Clay

Wolfman_J
Choice: Hippie Battle
From: EarthBound (and EarthBound Beginnings)
Why: For the most part, Smash has been good to the music of EarthBound, referencing many of its most iconic and important pieces over the course of four games, as well as its unique musical sensibilities. However, there is one area it’s only really tried once, and with the loss of “Humoresque of a Little Dog” we are currently without a reference to its interest in popular American music. The interpretation of western culture is a major, fundamental part of EarthBound (especially in its music, which drew extensively from the work of John Lennon), and despite their notorious potential legal issues the entire score came back in the Wii U Virtual Console releases for both games. There shouldn’t be any problem adding the wonderful off-brand version of Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode” used for the New Age Retro Hippie enemy (as well as Onett’s own knife-fighting, sort of looks like Dennis Hopper in Blue Velvet crime boss Frank Fly). It’s an incredibly iconic, recognizable track, even to people who’ve never played EarthBound (or Beginnings, where a “lesser” version initially appeared), and would provide a fun, Fifties Rock element otherwise absent from the game. If it’s too short to fit the game’s approximate two minute limit, it could also be nicely paired with “Otherwordly Foe” to get at the more abstract part of EarthBound’s music.

Nirbion
Choice: The Prince’s Adventure
From: 1838727-art(“For the Frog the Bell Tolls”)
Why: For many gamers, the name Kazumi Totaka conjures up images of egg-lobbing dinopals and guitar-playing puppies. Yet several years before voicing Yoshi and crafting tunes for Animal Crossing, Totaka provided the soundtrack for Kaeru no Tame ni Kane wa Naru. Never released outside Japan, Kaeru was developed alongside The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, and the former borrows cues from the latter and fuses them with RPG-style elements as well. Kaeru is a charming little game in which the protagonist, the Prince of the Sablé, embarks on a quest to save the kidnapped Princess Tiramisu, clashing with his rival Prince Richard along the way. The Sablé Prince appeared as an Assist Trophy in Super Smash Bros. for 3DS / Wii U, and I hope his inclusion leads to more Kaeru content in Smash in the future. While I would love to see the prince as a playable character, I would happily settle for a music track or two if I get to duke it out to something like this remix.

  1. I am still appalled by the fact that Hyrule Castle has never appeared as a track, especially with Hyrule Castle 64 returning (apparently it was more important to have 4 more versions of the Zelda main theme).

    • Honestly, the Castle 64 stages really don’t have that many inspiring tracks on them. Really feels like Sakurai was just picking songs out of a hat.

      • I’ll agree with you on Hyrule Castle, but the SM64 theme for Peach’s Castle 64 is amazing. <3 I was checking out the music tracks after downloading both stages, and was like: "THIS is going to make me play this."

  2. I’m really hoping for some Hyrule Warriors Soundtrack. Imagine Skyloft with the Skyloft Soundtrack from that game or with Kumite from HW. Bridge of Eldin and Hyrule Temple could get some fitting tracks, too. HW Soundtrack would be so great for Smash U!

I’m also looking for some great Codename S.T.E.A.M. Soundtack! “Lady Libery” would be so cool in Smash.

  3. I dunno if it was already in Brawl or -for Wii U, but I’d love to see the music from Corneria on SNES Star Fox in Smash. I’d love to hear a new arrangement for it too. <3

  4. I really wanted to see obscure songs, and also songs that are from Nintendo’s non-game materials (cartoons, movies, vinyls, etc).
Here are some that I wanted:
    Mining Melancholy (DKC2)
    Credits (Game Boy Camera)
    Octopus (Game & Watch Gallery)
    Yellow Giant (Doshin the Giant)
But of course, Super Mario Land theme… why isn’t it there? It’s one of the best Mario songs..

    • You get +10 coolness points for mentioning the Super Mario Land theme… totally forgot about that when I made my first comment, but I I remember how amazing it is now that you mentioned it. <3

  5. I incredibly crushed that ‘Cleopactra’ from Ms. Pac-Man Maze Madness wasn’t in Smash 4 on one of Pac-Man’s stages. It was one of the most memorable video game soundtracks from my childhood and it really has a really fun sound.
